Summary:
This project is designed to support a formal Mentoring Program. It could be used in a variety of organizational settings with minimal alterations.

Context:
This blog will exist in a government setting. The users will be enrolled in a formal Mentoring Program.

Resources:
Please read the following before attending the first Mentoring session:

Duration:
The Mentoring Program is officially a year long. However, participants can choose to continue their established relationships informally for indefinite periods of time.

Goals:
To maximize employee reflection and learning during their development program.

Participants:
Participants will be employees and managers that are enrolled in the Mentoring Program. The Training and Information Technology Departments will support participants as required.

Policies:
This program is offered as part of employee development. Our goal in providing this service is to promote organizational excellence by using blogging resources for professional and personal development.

Mentors and Mentees can use blogs as a way to communicate for purposes such as:

to share knowledge
to provide personal perspectives and approaches to the daily interactions in the workplace
to maximize learning
to provide constructive criticism
to communicate current events
to enable an ongoing relationship even if one or both are mobile
to focus on the mission.

Program participants must follow the guidance in the organization’s Web Blogging Instruction. In addition, for this program, there are some additional guidelines:

Participants must post at least once per week to their personal blog. Ongoing communication is essential to successful mentoring relationships.

Individual blogs will be accessible only to the Mentor and Mentee in order to preserve participants’ privacy.

Products:
The public blog will be available to all employees to learn from and participate in the Mentoring Program. After completion of the mentoring program, individual blogs will be archived to CD and given to the Mentors and Mentees for future reference. A master archive will be established and voluntarily populated with individual archives at the mentors’ and mentees’ discretion. The master archive will be available to all employees as a learning resource.

Evaluation:
When the formal Mentoring Program is finished, a survey will be distributed to all involved: Mentors, Mentees, Supervisors, Senior Leadership, Training Instructors, and IT Specialists to gather feedback. The survey will ask questions regarding the learning that took place (or didn’t), technical barriers, and other blog issues. Included will be space for comments. The next year’s program will incorporate the information received from these surveys in order to improve.

I was happy after reading Fiedler's article and now I'm really enthusiastic after reading Ganley's article. The description of her classroom experience and the blogging becoming an apprenticeship program suits the corporate world well. Blogging would enhance teamwork by highlighting each individual's skills so that work could be distributed where best suited. Headquarters could understand what's happening on the frontlines of their business at every far flung region of the world. It's a Win-Win proposition. It also allows employees to take charge of their learning and demonstrates in a public forum the competencies each has to offer.

I am so excited after reading Fiedler's article!

All week, in my mind, I was going to design a lesson plan for adults in the workplace as part of a mentoring program. The use of blogs would allow them to reflect their organizational learning and experiences. It would also allow others to mentor them and fellow "mentees" to blog together. This usage could be for new employees, mid-managers, or executives as part of development programs.

I am in total agreement with Fiedler about our culture focusing on teaching when what we should be focusing on is learning. We see it everyday with "sheeples" who follow the crowd, or do as they're told, instead of deciding for themselves based on what they have access to learn.

I wish blogs had been around years ago. I'm sure all the things I learned, and was aware of at different times during my education and career, would have great value as personal reference material.

Reflection on Stephen Downe's article

This article presented both the up and the down sides to current blog use. I found it very informative since blogging is new to me. I'm surprised that so many have adopted this new technology and made it their own. Since our class on Sat., I have found myself thinking of many possible uses of this technology. It really takes the "pain" out of web publishing and enables a more personal form of communication. I think like with every other new innovation, it will take time to discover the best uses of this medium. But I would definitely say that blogs are here to stay!

Thanks to Google, I have once again found a wealth of useful information. I was looking for a blog that focused on communities of practice. I turned up with Guerrillakm. This site is written by Greg Searle, the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Tomoye. Tomoye sells a community of practice software tool called Simplify which I used at work a few years ago - didn't like my organization's implementation of it but I'm sure that was probably an inhouse problem vs a "tool" inadequacy.

. . . before I wander off on that tale of woe . . . back to the subject at hand. This blog has all kinds of links to community of practice/KM/blog related content. I'm sure that I will find some useful items here for future use.

I've been curious to try blogging and hope to find some personal and professional benefits in it for me. Blogging seems a great way to connect with many others on a day-to-day basis even when available time is at a premium.
